Spartan furnishings and few amenities, but cheap. Rooms are small and dingy, with exception of the third floor suite.
1st Avenida on Calle 12
Downtown
At first glance, the Cohiba is a real find. It's located exactly between the main strip (5th Avenida) and prime Caribbean beachfront, in the center of the Playa club area.
The hotel's central location gives you prime access to the beach during the day and the wild Playa clubs at night. The Merkabar lounge is located downstairs in the lobby and Om is right next door. There are over a dozen clubs within 200 feet of the Hotel lobby, and you are no more than a short walk away to late night hotspots like Bali and Santoria. It's hard to find a better location in all of Playa.
The hotel is clean but lacks any of the trendy atmosphere found outside. The "Yucatan style" rooms are dull and drab. We found the stark white walls to be tiresome. Some rooms on the second floor don't have windows, much less views. And furthermore, we noticed that in one room the safe deposit box lock was drilled out, while in another the toilet didn't work. Other sites credit the hotel with having internet access, but despite repeated attempts to connect (and many calls to room service), we were not able to use it.
Overall, the Hotel Cohiba is a budget hotel with few amenities that will appeal to singles or those on a budget (it's not family-friendly). Don't count on internet access or a safe deposit box . The water isn't potable, so you'll need to bring or buy bottled water. And there is no pool, room service, laundry service, or fitness center. This is a room that you'll use for little more than sleeping and as a place to keep your things ... nothing more.
Insider Tip: If you do choose to stay here, be sure to request the master suite on the third floor. Unlike the other rooms, this is truly a nice suite to spend some time in as it offers a wonderful view of the ocean and a much nicer decor. The room is usually booked, so it's best to reserve it well in advance.
