The Blue Parrot Hotel and Beach Club is one of three properties operated under the well-known Blue Parrot brand. Each of the three is intended to serve the needs of different clientele: the Hotel on 5th Avenida hosts young partygoers, the Suites meet the needs of families and executives, and the Beach Club is well suited for families and sun worshippers looking for a laid-back caribbean beach vacation.
The hotel has quite a bit of history to it. It was the first hotel in Playa del Carmen, started over 25 years ago when there were nothing but dirt trails winding through the town. The beach club was the first topless beach in the area, which is quite remarkable given the conservative Mexican culture which frowns on such things. The Blue Parrot was bought by new owners from Chicago a few years ago, who have since transformed it into one of Playa's most heavily visited hotels (over 100,000 people a year stay at the Blue Parrot chain).
Today, the Blue Parrot Beach Club and Hotel has become a family-friendly property with a laid back, caribbean atmosphere. Here you can spend your days relaxing on the beach while the staff brings you drinks. There are plenty of kids running around, which is nice for families but can be less than ideal for those without children. The beach club is well-maintained and there are plenty of beach chairs, as long as you are getting drink service from the bar.
At night, the beach transforms into an adult disco complete with two dance floors and DJs. Over 2,000 people a night visit the club, making it one of the busiest clubs in Playa (second only to Bali). The crowd who comes here are the young and beautiful, mostly international travelers. Cover charge is 60 pesos (about USD $6) but this is waived for guests of the hotel.
The hotel itself is located about half a block south of the beach club on 1st Avenida (a short walk). The 39 rooms have older furniture and a more conservative decor than either the Suites or the 5th Avenida property, which is to be somewhat expected as this is the oldest of the three properties. Most rooms have kitchenettes, a minibar, safe deposit box, and wireless internet access (although we had problems maintaining a connection to the internet).
House keeping at the Blue Parrot can be inconsistent, perhaps even sloppy at times, so it may be best to tip well on the first evening of your stay to encourage better service. You'll also have to endure a time share pitch from the guest services manager, but if you let him know right away that you have no intention of purchasing, he will leave you alone.
Deluxe beach front studios are available, but tend to be quite expensive at $250 or more per night. One bedrooms and studios are less expensive and more readily available than at the other Blue Parrot hotels because there are more rooms at this property.
