Alhambra Hotel Review

The Alhambra is a popular mainstay hotel in Playa del Carmen. Centrally located on the beach near the center of town (and just steps away from the action on 5th Avenida), this clean and simple, yet elegant hotel is a terrific value with most rooms costing under $100 per night.

The hotel grounds are well maintained and kept spotless by the staff. As you step into the Alhambra, you may be surprised to find ornate arabic designs, crystal clear pools with fountains, and serene seating areas to lounge in. While the hotel is relatively small (20 rooms on four floors), the decor is far more pleasing to the eye than some of the smaller all-inclusives in town.

Four stories up you'll find the rooftop solarium, from where many of the world famous photos of Playa del Carmen have been taken. The Alhambra is one of the few hotels in Playa to offer such stunning views of the ocean. On a clear day (and that is most days in Playa), you can see for several miles. The solarium itself is open for lounging, and we suggest that you take advantage of this secluded hideout during the weekends, when it can get very busy on the beach.

The beach itself is typical for most Playa hotels. Beach chairs are provided and umbrellas are available upon request. Waiters will serve you drinks and you can also enjoy inexpensive massages as well. The beachfront is owned by the Mexican government, so it tends to get quite littered by the early afternoon (like most beach hotels, the Alhambra does not rake the beach).

The rooms are clean and comfortable. The maid service is very good here, and the kids will enjoy the towel art which is left on the beds each day. The shower pressure is low (as in most beachfront hotels) and the temperature never seems to get above luke warm. None of the rooms have safe deposit boxes, but you can leave valuables in the office safe at reception.

The water at the Alhambra is non-potable, so you should not drink it nor use it to brush your teeth. The hotel provides clean water dispensers in the hallways for this purpose.

We overwhelmingly recommend reserving the balcony rooms if they are available. For the most part rooms at the Alhambra are spacious, but there are a few exceptions in the "standard" category. Should you be unlucky enough to receive a small room, you probably will not able to upgrade as the Alhambra is exceptionally popular. Also, only the balcony rooms have minibars and magnificent views of the ocean.

The staff here is known for being incredibly friendly and responsive. We've heard of a few problems, but the customers we talked to were overwhelmingly pleased with their experience here.

This hotel is well suited for both couples and families.

While we found the Alhambra to be an excellent value, your opinion of the hotel may vary depending upon your taste and budget. While it's a terrific hotel at less than $100 per night, you may find yourself feeling a bit jealous (especially when you see the Mosquito Beach hotel next door). Our advice is that if you are willing to pay just a little more, you'll be able to find some incredible deals.

Insider Tips

* For about $9 more per day, you can have breakfast included with your stay. The breakfast is better than average, but certainly not gourmet. You can get eggs made to order and the coffee is acceptable. If you order through us, please state if you would like us to include breakfast with your room.

* Arrive early to get a beach chair, but remember that they can be uncomfortable. If you want a cushion (the Alhambra doesn't provide these), you can usually tip the waiters from Playa Maya next door to get one.

* The Alhambra is one of the few hotels in town that offers an indoor yoga studio. Namaste!
