If you're looking for music, dancing, people watching and having a good time, you'll find them all in Playa Del Carmen. And one of the best places to start is at the world-famous Tequila Barrel.
Located on 5th Avenida right near the Hotel Deseo and the Blue Parrot, the Tequila Barrel is one of the first places most travellers visit. Sit out front on the street-side lounge and watch the Fifth Avenue nightly promenade. Or move to the interior and watch American sports on the TVs. If you really want to get adventuresome, check out the back room where the dance floor features a pole normally found in locales with exotic dancers. On many nights, the Tequila Barrel has theme parties (Disco night is popular), Karaoke, or live music. And of course, this is one of the prime spots in town to watch American sports (particularly Dallas games, which draw a huge crowd).
The customers come from all age groups but largely fall in the 30-something crowd (as in most spots in Playa). Perhaps unexpectedly for such a well known bar, you'll also find plenty of locals mixing with the tourists.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and you'll likely make your first friends here. However, the bland atmosphere and never-ending stream of tourists can get tired quick. It's worth a visit or two, but make sure to sample some of the other great venues in town.
The food here consists of light bar fare, but is fresh, well-prepared, and generally better than most places in town. Tequila Barrel is perhaps the only place in Playa where you can find American-style buffalo wings (prepared by a master chef!). If you're in the mood for tequila, be sure to try the Don Julio. If not, the pina coladas and the $2 Coronas will do the trick. Enjoy!

The Tequila Barrel is my favourite drinking spot whenever I'm in downtown Playa. It's the best spot to sit and drink and just watch the world go by down 5th Avenue. This is where you should go to chat and have a few with friends before you go out to the Blue Parrot or the Captain's. The seats are wood, teak, and leather--a very comfy atmosphere to kick back in. There's a vast array of beers, mixed drinks, and a whole wall of different tequilas to choose from. The margaritas come in massive glasses. The waiters/waitress are very quick to deliver the first round of drinks to your table but can be slow as molasses after that (you may even have a hard time getting their attention.) Slow service is the bar's biggest drawback. Apparently there is a modest Tex-Mex menu at the Tequila Barrel, but I've never seen anybody eating there--just drinking. Sometimes there's a live Spanish, blues, or reggae band playing here, but they generally wrap up early in the night (before 10:00 p.m.). However, "location, location, location," that's what the Tequila Barrel is really all about. It sits right at the heart of Playa--people watchers, this is the place for you.
